WHY IS DRY WOOD BETTER THAN WET WOOD?

We all learn that wet wood is more challenging to burn. But there certainly are actually many more reasons why dry wood is far preferable.

Whenever we talk about wet wood, we usually are not talking about wet to touch, but we are really talking about the total amount of water held in the wood. This is significant, because a dry piece of wood that has rain water on the surface, is much superior to wet wood that appears to be dry on the surface. Dry wood is dry all the way to the core, whereas wet wood may seem to be dry on the surface but a few short mm in, it is still wet.
When wood is dried, it shrinks, this means obtaining wet wood you really get less, given that each cubic meter is filled with extra water instead of dry wood.

Have you ever observed that heating cooking oil requires a lot less time than heating water? Well, that’s since water requires a lot of energy to heat up compared to many other compounds. What’s more, is that in order to turn water into steam demands even more energy. In fact, wetter the wood is, the more the heating potential of the wood is used in warming up the water, and turning it into steam. Most of this steam then goes out the chimney without you ever experiencing the benefit.

Drier wood signifies a higher amount of the energy in the firewood is being pumped into your house as heat. Wetter wood means a higher amount of the energy in the firewood is consumed by water and squandered.

Higher moisture content also prevents the wood from burning hot. Burning hot is crucial for burning clean, therefore wetter wood, means more smoke. Smoke is actually unburnt gases, meaning that you are not just producing smog, but gases you could very well have burnt in your fire are disappearing out the chimney.

Double check your firewood to ensure it is suitably dry. Also, be sure to elevate and cover your outside stack to protect it from the rain and snow. Firewood can absorb moisture from the elements as well!
